The useful question is not whether you need a completely different program because you have turned 40. It is which physical qualities matter to your life, what your current week develops and what is being missed.
“Fit” describes more than one ability
Strength is the ability to produce force. Aerobic fitness supports sustained activity. Power involves producing force quickly. Balance helps you control your position, while mobility describes the movement available to you.
Those qualities overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Compare carrying a heavy suitcase, walking through a terminal, stepping quickly to regain balance and reaching into an overhead compartment. Each task asks something different of you.
Use the activities you care about to make the goal specific. “Stay fit” becomes more useful when it means finishing a round of golf without fading, continuing to play tennis or lifting and carrying comfortably.
What should a balanced week address?
Australia’s current movement recommendations for adults aged 18 to 64 include at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity on most days, strengthening on two or more days each week, and activities involving mobility, balance and coordination on three or more days.
They also include light activity throughout the day, less prolonged sitting and seven to nine hours of sleep with consistent bed and waking times. The guidance for adults aged 65 and over gives a sleep range of seven to eight hours.
These are population recommendations, not a demand to immediately add everything at full intensity. Your starting point, current health and existing activity determine how you build towards an appropriate routine.
Different activities can meet more than one need. The practical task is to check what your actual week contains rather than count how many times you enter a gym.
Understand effort, not just exercise labels
The same walking route can be easy for one person and demanding for another. Calling an activity “cardio” does not tell you how challenging it is for you.
The talk test is a useful guide to aerobic effort. At moderate intensity, you can generally speak but would find singing difficult. At vigorous intensity, you can usually manage only a few words before pausing for breath.
This is a guide, not medical clearance. Symptoms and any prescribed exercise limits still take priority. A heart rate target also needs context rather than being treated as an instruction that overrides how you feel.
What makes strength training progressive?
Repeating an exercise is useful practice. Progression means reviewing the challenge as your ability changes.
For a selected strength exercise, the important details include the resistance, repetitions, sets, movement range and effort. A repetition is one complete movement. A set is a group of repetitions before a rest.
An original example: someone has been prescribed two sets of a supported exercise. They now complete the planned repetitions comfortably with consistent technique. The next review might increase the resistance slightly, add repetitions or change another aspect of the task. It would not need to increase everything at once.
Record the actual exercise and the adjustment. “A little heavier than last month, with the same movement and manageable effort” tells you more than “a tough workout”.
You do not have to finish every set at your limit
The 2026 ACSM position stand drew together 137 systematic reviews of resistance training in healthy adults. Strength training improved multiple aspects of muscle function and physical performance. Different goals responded to different program features, but training until another repetition was impossible did not consistently improve results.
The practical message is to choose a repeatable program that suits the goal, not to treat exhaustion or constant novelty as proof of quality. These findings concern healthy adults; they do not replace condition specific exercise guidance.
For a beginner, learning the movement and establishing consistency may be the immediate priority. For an experienced lifter, the next useful change may be more targeted. The program should reflect that difference.
Review your current week before adding more
Here is an example of reviewing a routine. It is not a program to copy.

The purpose is not to mark a week as good or bad. It is to identify the smallest useful change. Adding a demanding session may be less helpful than making two existing sessions consistent and purposeful.
Track three things, not every number available
Choose a measure of participation, a measure of capacity and something that matters outside the test.
Participation might be how often the planned sessions were completed. Capacity might be the load and repetitions in a chosen exercise, or effort on a familiar walk. The real life outcome could be finishing a game with more confidence or carrying groceries more comfortably.
Record the conditions. A hillier route, shorter rests or a different exercise variation changes what you are comparing. A simple diary kept consistently can be more informative than a large collection of disconnected scores.
For the next two weeks, record what you did, roughly how long it took, how hard it felt and what affected your ability to complete it. Use that record to decide what needs attention. This is information gathering, not a request to perform new maximal tests.
When more testing is useful
A test is most useful when it helps answer a decision you cannot resolve from the available information. A strength measure might help target a limitation. An aerobic assessment may help clarify current capacity and support exercise planning.
You do not automatically need VO₂ testing, DEXA or a broad test package because you are over 40. It is reasonable to ask what the result would change and how it would be interpreted.
For health context, higher cardiorespiratory fitness is consistently associated with better outcomes in cohort research. That supports taking fitness seriously, but it does not show that purchasing a test itself improves health or predicts an individual lifespan.
Do not write off new symptoms as age
A clear change in exercise tolerance, unexplained symptoms or a problem that is worsening deserves appropriate review. Adjusting a routine and investigating a new symptom are not the same task.
Stop exercise and call 000 for severe chest pain or chest pain with breathlessness, dizziness or a cold sweat. Other new exercise symptoms should be discussed with the appropriate clinician rather than simply trained through.
Choose one useful next step
Write down the activity you most want to maintain, review what your week currently develops and identify the main unanswered question. You may need a small program change, a focused assessment or a broader review where several issues overlap.
